SEO Packages UK (2026): What You Actually Get for £1,000, £2,500 and £5,000 a Month

Most SEO package pages list features: "keyword research", "on-page optimisation", "monthly report". Almost every package includes those words. What separates a package that grows your business from one that quietly wastes a year of budget is how much real work sits behind each line, and whether the package is built for how search works in 2026.

This guide shows what each budget level should include, what it realistically cannot include, and how to check a proposal before you sign. If you want price ranges by industry and business size, read our guide to SEO costs in the UK. This page is about what you are buying.

What is an SEO package?

An SEO package is a defined scope of search engine optimisation work delivered for a fixed monthly fee, usually on a 6 to 12 month agreement. A good package covers four areas:

  • Technical SEO: making sure search engines and AI systems can crawl, render and understand your site.
  • Content: creating and improving pages that answer what your customers search for.
  • Authority: earning links, mentions and reviews that show Google your business is trusted.
  • Measurement: tracking rankings, traffic, AI referrals and, most importantly, leads.

The package price mainly reflects time. At typical UK agency rates of £75 to £150 an hour, £1,000 a month buys roughly 7 to 13 hours of work. £2,500 buys roughly 17 to 33 hours. £5,000 buys roughly 33 to 66 hours. Keep those numbers in mind when a package promises a long list of deliverables at a low price.

UK SEO packages compared: £1,000 vs £2,500 vs £5,000 a month

What's included Starter (~£1,000/month) Growth (~£2,500/month) Competitive (£5,000+/month)
Best for Local businesses, one location, low competition Growing businesses targeting regional or niche national terms National brands, competitive sectors (legal, finance, SaaS, ecommerce)
Approximate hours 7–13 hours 17–33 hours 33–66+ hours
Technical SEO Initial audit, priority fixes, monthly health check Full audit, ongoing fixes, Core Web Vitals, structured data Continuous technical programme, log analysis, migration support
Content 1–2 optimised pages or articles 3–5 pages or articles plus updates to existing pages 6+ pieces, topic clusters, original research or data
Authority building Google Business Profile, local citations, reviews Targeted outreach, partnerships, industry mentions Digital PR campaigns earning national press coverage
AI search (AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini) Answer-first formatting on key pages Entity and schema work, AI referral tracking Full AI visibility programme, brand mention monitoring
Reporting Monthly summary Monthly report with leads, plus quarterly review Dashboard, monthly strategy call, revenue attribution

These tiers line up with the budgets in our UK SEO cost guide. They are guide levels, not fixed menus. A well-run agency adjusts the mix to your site: a business with a broken website needs more technical time in month one, while a technically sound site can put more budget into content and authority.

What a £1,000 a month SEO package includes

A £1,000 package is a focused package. It works well for a local business competing in one town or city, such as a dental practice, solicitor, trades business or clinic.

What you should get

  • A technical audit in month one, with the highest-impact fixes completed
  • Google Business Profile optimisation and regular posts
  • Consistent business details across key UK directories
  • A review generation process
  • One or two new or improved service pages each month
  • A short monthly report covering rankings, calls and enquiries

What it cannot realistically include

Ten hours a month is not enough for national rankings in a competitive sector, regular digital PR, or a high volume of quality content. If a £1,000 package promises all three, something is being automated or skipped.

What a £2,500 a month SEO package includes

The £2,500 level is where most growing UK businesses see the best return. There is enough time to fix the site, publish useful content every month and build authority at the same time.

What you should get

  • A full technical audit and an ongoing fix list, including page speed and Core Web Vitals
  • Keyword and search intent research mapped to your services and buyer journey
  • Three to five new pages or articles a month, plus updates to pages that are losing rankings
  • Structured data (schema) so search engines and AI systems understand your business, services and authors
  • Outreach for relevant links and mentions from industry sites
  • Conversion improvements on key landing pages, so more visitors become enquiries
  • Monthly reporting tied to leads, plus a quarterly strategy review

At this level, ask how content is produced. AI-assisted drafting is normal in 2026, but every page should be edited and checked by someone who knows your industry. Our view on AI content versus human content explains why.

What a £5,000+ a month SEO package includes

A £5,000 or higher package is built for national competition. Sectors such as legal, finance, SaaS and large ecommerce need this level because competitors are already investing heavily.

What you should get

  • A dedicated SEO lead and a team covering technical, content and PR
  • Topic clusters that cover a subject in depth, rather than one-off articles
  • Original research, data or tools that other sites want to reference
  • Digital PR campaigns aimed at national and trade press
  • An AI search visibility programme across Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity
  • Technical support for redesigns and migrations, so you don't lose rankings (see our website migration SEO guide)
  • Reporting connected to pipeline and revenue, not only traffic

What should an SEO package include in 2026?

Search changed more between 2024 and 2026 than in the previous decade. Google now answers many questions directly in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and a growing share of buyers research suppliers in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity before visiting any website. An SEO package written in 2022 does not cover this.

In 2026, check that a package covers three types of search optimisation:

Discipline What it means What to look for in the package
SEO (search engine optimisation) Ranking in Google's traditional results Technical health, content, links, local presence
AEO (answer engine optimisation) Being the answer Google shows in AI Overviews, featured snippets and People Also Ask Answer-first page structure, clear definitions, FAQ content, schema markup
GEO (generative engine optimisation) Being cited or recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot Brand mentions on trusted sites, consistent business information, original data, named expert authors

You can measure part of this yourself. Google Analytics 4 now shows an AI Assistant channel for visits from tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. A 2026 package should report on it. For a deeper look, read our guide on how to appear in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Cheap SEO packages: what gets left out

Packages advertised at £99 to £500 a month are common. Some are honest, small-scope services. Many save time by doing work that has no effect or that can harm your site. Watch for:

  • Guaranteed rankings or "page one in 30 days". Google's own guidance on hiring an SEO states that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.
  • Large numbers of directory submissions or "backlinks" each month. Bulk low-quality links are ignored at best and can trigger penalties at worst.
  • Dozens of unedited AI articles a month. Thin, mass-produced content is exactly what Google's spam and helpful content systems target.
  • Keyword counts as the main deliverable. "We'll target 50 keywords" means little without saying which pages will rank for them and why.
  • Reports with rankings but no leads. If the report never mentions enquiries, calls or sales, you cannot tell whether SEO is paying for itself.
  • No access to your own data. You should own your Google Search Console, Google Analytics and Google Business Profile accounts.

A cheap package is not automatically bad. It is bad when the promises are bigger than the hours behind them.

Local SEO packages vs national SEO packages

Local SEO package National SEO package
Typical UK cost £500–£2,500 a month £2,500–£10,000+ a month
Main goal Appear in the map pack and local results Rank across the UK for service and industry terms
Key work Google Business Profile, reviews, local citations, location pages Content depth, technical scale, digital PR, AI search visibility
Typical time to results 3–6 months 6–12+ months

If you serve several towns, a local package with location pages is usually enough. If customers can buy from you anywhere in the UK, you need a national package. A local budget will not compete with national competitors.

How to judge an SEO package proposal

Before you sign, check the proposal against these seven questions. A good agency will answer all of them in writing.

  1. How many hours are included each month, and who does the work?
  2. What happens in the first 90 days? You should see an audit, a prioritised plan and early fixes, not just "ongoing optimisation".
  3. Which pages will be created or improved, and for which searches?
  4. How are links and mentions earned? Ask for examples of recent placements.
  5. How does the package cover AI Overviews and AI assistants? If the answer is vague, the package is out of date.
  6. How will success be measured? The answer should include leads or revenue, not only rankings.
  7. What is the contract length and notice period? Six to twelve months is normal for SEO. Long lock-ins with no break clause are not.

For the wider buying process, including red flags and the difference between freelancers and agencies, see how to choose an SEO agency.

Is an SEO package worth it?

An SEO package is worth it when three things are true: your customers search for what you sell, the package has enough hours to compete in your market, and you can commit for at least six to twelve months. SEO builds slowly, but unlike paid ads, the traffic does not stop the day you stop paying.

If you are unsure what level you need, start with an audit. Our guide on how to do an SEO audit shows what a proper audit covers, and an audit result tells you whether you need a starter, growth or competitive package.
